About ancient context

The Bible was written in ancient cultures very different from our own. A phrase that seems strange to modern readers - a man removing his sandal to confirm a contract, a woman gleaning grain at the edge of a field, a king sitting at the city gate - was immediately clear to its original audience.

Ancient Context articles explain those cultural practices using archaeology, ancient Near Eastern texts, and comparative anthropology. Each article links to the Bible passages where the custom appears, and to deeper resources in the ISBE encyclopedia.
