Johnson Oatman Jr. wrote this gospel song as a practical application of Philippians 4:8 ('whatever is true... whatever is praiseworthy - think about such things') and Ephesians 1:3 ('Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places'). Edwin Excell composed the brisk tune that made it one of the most widely sung evangelical gospel songs of the early twentieth century, translated into dozens of languages and used in early Salvation Army campaigns.
