Revelation 14:19 describes the 'great winepress of the wrath of God' and the treading of grapes as an image of divine judgment. Julia Ward Howe's 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' (1861) adapted this into 'He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.' John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939) took the phrase as his title, making it permanently associated with the suffering of the dispossessed.
