Fanny Crosby wrote this consecration hymn drawing from Psalm 73:25 ('Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you') and James 4:8 ('Come near to God and he will come near to you'). The hymn became a staple of the Moody-Sankey revivals and the Keswick Higher Life conventions, where its call for deeper consecration matched the theological emphasis on sanctification. Its refrain 'Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord' became one of the most recognized phrases in Victorian evangelical devotion.
