Summary

King Demetrius marched east to fight a different enemy and was captured. That left Simon free to lead Judea without threat. Under Simon's rule, life in Judea became peaceful and good. Farmers grew crops. Old men sat in the city squares. Young men trained as soldiers. Everyone felt safe.

Simon captured Joppa as a seaport and took back Gazara, Beth-zur, and the citadel in Jerusalem. He was kind to poor people and enforced the law fairly. Rome and Sparta heard about Jonathan's death and were sad. When they learned Simon had taken over, they sent him friendly letters to keep the alliance going.

Simon sent a big gold shield to Rome as a gift to confirm their friendship. The Jewish people wanted to honor Simon for all he had done. They wrote a big decree on bronze tablets and put them up on Mount Zion. The decree listed everything Simon and his family had done for Israel.

This chapter takes place around 140-139 BC. It celebrates the golden age of Simon's rule. Simon was the last surviving son of Mattathias, the man who started the Maccabee revolt. After years of war, the Jewish people finally had peace, self-rule, and a real leader who cared about them.

The bronze tablet decree was a major event. It made Simon's leadership official and permanent in the eyes of the people. The Romans and Spartans recognizing Simon also showed the world that Judea was a real, respected nation again. This was a big deal after years of foreign oppression.
