1 MaccabeesChapter 16
1 Maccabees Chapter 16: Meaning
Simon's sons defeat the enemy army, but Simon and two of his sons are murdered by a traitor.
Summary
John came home from Gazara and told his father Simon what the enemy Cendebeus had been doing. Simon was old now, so he told his sons Judas and John to take his place and fight. He believed God would help them. He chose twenty thousand fighters and they set out. The next morning they met the enemy at a stream. John crossed first to encourage his troops, and they followed. The battle went well. The enemy ran, and about two thousand of them were killed.
But danger was coming from inside. A man named Ptolemy, who was governor of Jericho and the high priest's son-in-law, grew greedy and selfish. He wanted to take over the whole country. He planned a deadly trap.
Simon was visiting cities in the area. He came to a small fortress called Dok with his sons Mattathias and Judas. Ptolemy hosted a big dinner party for them. Hidden soldiers were waiting. When Simon and his sons had eaten and drunk freely, Ptolemy's men rushed in and killed Simon, Mattathias, and Judas. It was a terrible betrayal.
Ptolemy sent messages to the king asking for help to take over the country. He also sent men to kill John at Gazara. But someone warned John in time. John arrested the killers before they could act. The book ends by saying the rest of John's story is written in the records of his priesthood.
Historical Context
This chapter takes place around 135 BC. It is the last chapter of 1 Maccabees. Simon's murder was a shocking betrayal. He had brought the Jewish people freedom, peace, and prosperity. To be killed by a family member was especially terrible.
The murder at Dok ended the life of the last of Mattathias's sons. Judas, Jonathan, and now Simon, all three brothers who led Israel had died violently. But the Maccabee line continued through John, who became the next leader and high priest. John is known in history as John Hyrcanus.
