2 John Chapter 1: Meaning

John writes to encourage walking in love and truth, and warns against welcoming teachers who deny Jesus.

Summary
John, writing as "the elder," sends this letter to a lady and her children, which likely means a local church and its members. He says he loves them truly, along with everyone else who knows the truth. He is glad that some of her children are living according to the truth, just as God commanded. John then reminds them of a command that is not new but has been there from the very beginning: love one another. Real love means living the way God tells us to. It is not just a feeling, it is a way of life. He then gives a serious warning. Many people who tell lies have gone out into the world. These people refuse to say that Jesus Christ came as a real human being. John calls them deceivers and antichrists. He tells his readers to be very careful not to lose what they have worked for. Anyone who goes beyond the teaching of Christ, who moves away from it, does not have God. But whoever stays in that teaching has both the Father and the Son. John ends with a practical rule: if someone comes to your home and brings this wrong teaching, do not welcome them in and do not even greet them. Welcoming them would make you partly responsible for their harmful work. John closes by saying he hopes to visit in person soon so they can have a full and joyful conversation.

Historical Context

John wrote this short letter around 90 AD, most likely from the city of Ephesus. In the early church, believers met in homes, and traveling teachers would go from place to place sharing messages. This was a time when wrong ideas about Jesus, like the idea that he was not really human, were spreading fast.

John's warning about not welcoming false teachers into your home was very practical for those early house churches. Letting a false teacher in was like giving them a platform. John wanted believers to protect the truth carefully.

What This Means Today

Love and truth always go together — you cannot have real love without also caring about what is true.
Stay with what you have been taught about Jesus from the beginning — do not wander after new ideas that move away from him.
Be careful about who you give a platform to in your church or home, especially if they teach wrong things about Jesus.
Protecting the truth is an act of love — it keeps others from being led the wrong way.
