2 Kings 19:35
And it came to pass that night, that the angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
What Does This Verse Mean?

This verse describes a dramatic divine intervention during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah. On a single night, an angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 soldiers in the Assyrian military camp that was besieging Jerusalem. The next morning, the entire Assyrian force was discovered dead, delivering Jerusalem from imminent destruction without any human military action.

What’s Happening Here

This event occurs during Sennacherib's invasion of Judah (701 BC), when the Assyrian king threatened Jerusalem and mocked God. Hezekiah prayed desperately, and the prophet Isaiah delivered God's promise of deliverance. This miraculous defeat forced Sennacherib to retreat to Nineveh, where he was later assassinated by his own sons, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy.

Key Words

angel of JehovahA divine messenger or agent of God's judgment, representing God's direct intervention in human affairs.
smoteStruck down or killed suddenly, indicating a decisive and supernatural act of destruction.
arose early in the morningA common biblical phrase emphasizing discovery at dawn, highlighting the suddenness and completeness of the event.

Why It Matters

This story demonstrates God's power to protect His people against overwhelming odds and affirms that human arrogance against God has consequences. For modern readers, it illustrates themes of divine deliverance, the limits of human power, and the importance of faith during crises, showing that some battles are won through spiritual means rather than military might.

Did You Know?

The Greek historian Herodotus recorded a mysterious plague that struck the Assyrian army around this time, possibly providing external historical corroboration for this biblical account.
