2 MaccabeesChapter 11
2 Maccabees Chapter 11: Meaning
A general named Lysias attacks the Jews but is defeated, then peace letters are exchanged.
Summary
A powerful man named Lysias was in charge of the king's government. He was angry about all the Jewish victories and came with a huge army, eighty thousand soldiers and many horsemen. He planned to make Jerusalem a Greek city and sell off the high priesthood for money. He did not take God's power seriously at all.
Judas and his men heard that Lysias was coming. They fell down and wept, begging God to send an angel to rescue them. Then they bravely marched out together. Just as they were leaving Jerusalem, a rider appeared in front of them dressed in white and wearing golden armor. Their spirits lifted completely. They charged at the enemy like lions and defeated them badly, eleven thousand infantry and sixteen hundred cavalry were killed. Lysias barely escaped alive.
Lysias was smart enough to realize the Jews were winning because God fought for them. He sent them a message offering to make peace and to convince the king to be their friend. Judas agreed, always keeping the good of the people in mind.
The chapter ends with four letters. Lysias wrote to tell the Jews their requests had been sent to the king. The king wrote back saying the Jews could follow their own laws and the temple would be returned to them. The king also wrote to the Jewish people directly, saying those who returned home by a certain date would be safe. And ambassadors from Rome wrote to confirm that they supported what Lysias had agreed to.
Historical Context
This chapter describes events around 164 BC, shortly after the temple was purified. Lysias was the regent, the person ruling on behalf of the young king Antiochus Eupator. He was one of the most powerful men in the Seleucid Empire.
The peace letters included in this chapter are considered historically important documents. They show that the Jewish people eventually won back some of their religious freedoms after years of persecution and fighting.
