2 MaccabeesChapter 2

2 Maccabees Chapter 2: Meaning

Ancient records tell of Jeremiah hiding sacred objects, and the author explains why he wrote this book.

Summary
Old records said that the prophet Jeremiah warned the Jewish people not to forget God's law when they were taken away as prisoners. He told them not to bow to idols of gold or silver. He also told them to keep the law in their hearts no matter what. According to the records, Jeremiah also hid the sacred tent of meeting and the ark of the covenant in a cave on a mountain, just before the people were carried off. He sealed the cave shut. Some people tried to find the path back to it but could not. Jeremiah said the place would stay hidden until God gathered his people again and showed them mercy. The records also talked about how Solomon, Moses, and Nehemiah all saw fire come from heaven to burn sacrifices. Nehemiah gathered a library of important books, the writings of the kings, the prophets, and the psalms of David. Judas Maccabeus later gathered up all the books that had been scattered during the wars. These were kept safe. Then the author introduces the book itself. He says that a man named Jason of Cyrene had already written five books about Judas Maccabeus and his battles. The author is making a shorter version of all five books into one. His goal is to make it enjoyable and easy to read. He compared himself to someone planning a banquet, putting in the hard work so others can enjoy the meal.

Historical Context

This chapter is part of the introduction to 2 Maccabees. The book was written around 120-100 BC, looking back at events from about 175-161 BC. The author is summing up the five-volume work of Jason of Cyrene into a single scroll for Jewish people who might not have access to the longer version.

The stories about Jeremiah, Solomon, and Nehemiah connect the Maccabee story to Israel's long history. They show that God has always protected the temple and the Jewish people. By preserving books and sacred records, the Jewish people kept their identity alive even during difficult times.
