2 MaccabeesChapter 7
2 Maccabees Chapter 7: Meaning
Seven brothers and their mother are killed one by one for refusing to break God's laws.
Summary
A king tried to force seven brothers and their mother to eat pork, which God's law said was wrong. One by one, each brother was brought forward and tortured. Each one refused to give in. The first brother spoke for all of them: they would rather die than break the laws of their ancestors.
Each dying brother said something powerful. The second said God would raise them up to eternal life. The third held out his hands to be cut off and said he expected to get them back from God. The fourth said his torturers would not rise again. The fifth warned the king that God had not abandoned the Jewish people. The sixth said the brothers were suffering because of their own sins, but the king should not think he would go unpunished either.
The mother watched all of this without breaking down. She encouraged each of her sons in their own language. She told them God had made them and would give them back their breath and life. When the king tried to get her to persuade the youngest to give in, she leaned close to him and instead told him to be brave. She reminded him that God made the world out of nothing and could bring them back to life.
The youngest refused the king's offers of riches and power. He gave a bold speech warning the king that God's punishment was coming. He said his brothers now enjoyed eternal life, but the king would face God's judgment. Then he died, and finally the mother died too.
Historical Context
This chapter takes place during the persecution of the Jews by King Antiochus IV around 167 BC. He had banned Jewish religious practices and was forcing Jews to prove their loyalty to his Greek religion by eating sacrificial food that their law forbade.
The story of the seven brothers became one of the most famous martyr stories in Jewish history. It showed that belief in resurrection, life after death, gave people the courage to face even terrible suffering. The mother's bravery was especially praised.
