3 John Chapter 1: Meaning

John praises Gaius for welcoming traveling ministers, and warns against the prideful leader Diotrephes.

Summary
John writes this short letter to his dear friend Gaius. He prays that Gaius will do well in every way, including his health, just as his soul is already doing well. John is very happy because he has heard from some brothers that Gaius is living by the truth. Nothing makes John happier than hearing that people he cares about are living right. John praises Gaius for the kind way he treats traveling missionaries, even strangers. These missionaries have come back and told the church how welcoming and loving Gaius is. John encourages him to keep sending them on their way in a way that honors God. These missionaries are traveling for the sake of Jesus, not for money, and they deserve support. When we help them, we become partners with them in spreading the truth. Then John brings up a problem: a man named Diotrephes. This person loves being in charge and will not accept John's authority. He is spreading lies and gossip about John. Worse, he refuses to welcome the brothers himself, and when others try to welcome them, he throws them out of the church. John says he will deal with this when he comes in person. Finally, John commends a man named Demetrius. Everyone speaks well of him, and the truth itself backs him up. John closes by saying he would rather talk with Gaius face to face than write everything down. He sends greetings from the friends with him.

Historical Context

This is the shortest letter in the whole New Testament. It was written by John, probably from Ephesus, around 90 AD. It was addressed to one person, a man named Gaius, which gives us a rare personal look into how early churches worked.

At that time, missionaries traveled from city to city spreading the message about Jesus. They depended on believers like Gaius to welcome them and provide for their needs. Diotrephes was a local leader who was blocking this system out of pride. John wrote this letter to encourage Gaius to keep doing good, even with that difficult situation happening.

What This Means Today

Be generous in welcoming and supporting people who serve God — your help makes you a partner in their work.
Do not use your position in a church to be in charge and control others — that kind of pride hurts the whole group.
Follow the example of good people like Gaius and Demetrius, not the example of people like Diotrephes.
Nothing brings more joy to those who care about you than hearing that you are living in truth.
Imitate what is good — the one who does good belongs to God.
