4 MaccabeesChapter 15

4 Maccabees Chapter 15: Meaning

A mother watches all seven of her sons die for their faith and never gives up or breaks down.

Summary
This chapter praises the mother of the seven brothers. She had a choice between saving her sons by letting them break God's law, or watching them die while they stayed faithful. She chose God's law, because she believed it leads to eternal life. The writer asks how anyone could describe a love as deep as a mother's. She had carried each child, nursed each one, and raised them all. The more children a mother has, the deeper her love grows. This mother had seven. Her love was as deep as it could be. Yet she watched each one die. She saw the fire, the injuries, and the pain. She heard her sons' cries. No sweet music could have drawn her the way her children's voices did. But faith kept her strong. She did not weep or beg the king to stop. The writer calls her more courageous than warriors. He compares her to Noah's ark, standing strong against a terrible flood. She was surrounded by waves of grief, but she held firm for the sake of her faith in God.

Historical Context

In the ancient world, mothers were expected to show the deepest grief when their children died. Weeping and mourning publicly were signs of love and proper behavior. This makes the mother's silence and strength even more remarkable to the original readers.

The author of 4 Maccabees holds this mother up as the greatest example in the whole book. More than any of the brothers, she demonstrates that faith can overcome even the most powerful human emotion, a parent's love for a child.
