4 MaccabeesChapter 18
4 Maccabees Chapter 18: Meaning
The book ends by calling Israel to obey God's law and honoring the faithful who died for it.
Summary
The book closes with a call to the children of Israel. The writer tells them to obey God's law in everything they do. He says faith controls not just feelings inside you, but outward actions too. Those who gave up their bodies for God's sake were honored by both people and by God himself.
Because of what the martyrs did, the nation found peace. Antiochus failed to force them to abandon their faith, and eventually he left Jerusalem and went to fight elsewhere. God's judgment followed him.
The mother then speaks and tells her own story. She was pure and faithful. She and her husband raised their children on God's word. Their father used to read them stories from Scripture, about Abel, Isaac, Joseph, Phinehas, Daniel, the three young men in the fire. He read them the words of Isaiah, David, Solomon, and Ezekiel. All of that teaching prepared them for what they faced.
The book ends by saying that the seven sons and their mother are now gathered with their ancestors, holding immortal souls given to them by God. The final words are a prayer of praise to God forever.
Historical Context
This final chapter wraps up the whole message of 4 Maccabees. The book was written to show Jewish readers, who may have been living under the pressure of Greek or Roman culture, that their faith was worth holding onto, no matter the cost.
The mother's speech about her husband teaching Scripture shows how important it was for Jewish families to pass down their faith through stories and reading. The references to Isaiah, the Psalms, and Ezekiel show that the family knew the whole range of Jewish writings, not just the law.
