JudithChapter 10

Judith Chapter 10: Meaning

Judith dresses up beautifully, leaves Bethulia, and is brought before the Assyrian commander Holofernes.

Summary
After her prayer, Judith got up and got ready. She took off her rough mourning clothes and washed herself. She put on her finest jewelry and beautiful clothing. She packed food for her journey and set out with her servant. When the city elders saw her, they were amazed at how beautiful she looked. They blessed her and prayed for her mission to succeed. Judith and her servant walked down the mountain and out into the valley. They were quickly spotted by Assyrian soldiers on patrol. The soldiers stopped them and asked who they were. Judith told them she was a Hebrew woman who was fleeing her people. She said the Israelites were about to be handed over to Holofernes anyway, and she wanted to go to him personally and show him a safe route to capture all of Judea without losing a single soldier. The soldiers were amazed by her beauty and believed her story. They gave her an escort of one hundred men and brought her to Holofernes' camp. Word spread quickly through the whole camp about this beautiful woman. Soldiers crowded around to see her. When she was finally brought into Holofernes' tent, even he came out to greet her. Everyone in the camp marveled at Judith.

Historical Context

In the ancient world, beauty was seen as a gift that could open doors and influence powerful people. Judith deliberately used her appearance as part of her plan to get close to Holofernes. This was not vanity, it was a strategic decision made after prayer.

The reaction of the soldiers shows how completely Judith's plan was working. Rather than being treated as a prisoner or enemy, she was welcomed and escorted with respect. God was already at work through her.
