SirachChapter 19
Sirach Chapter 19: Meaning
Ben Sira warns against gossip and bad habits, and says true wisdom means following God's law, not just being clever.
Summary
The chapter begins with a warning against bad habits. A worker who drinks too much will never build real wealth. Small bad choices add up over time. Wine and foolish relationships have pulled sensible people down. These habits slowly destroy a person from the inside out.
Ben Sira then gives a strong warning about gossip. Don't repeat everything you hear. If you hear a rumor, let it stay with you and go no further. It won't hurt you to keep quiet. Confronting someone directly is far better than spreading stories. Talk to your friend or neighbor first, maybe the story isn't even true. Give people the benefit of the doubt before believing everything you hear.
The chapter then tackles a big question: what is true wisdom? Being clever or knowing a lot of information is not the same as being wise. There is a kind of craftiness that is actually evil. There is a person who pretends to be humble while secretly planning to harm you. A person who truly fears God and follows his law, even if they are not very smart, is wiser than a genius who breaks God's rules.
The chapter ends with the observation that you can often tell what kind of person someone is just by looking at them. The way a person dresses, how they laugh, and how they walk all say something about their character.
Historical Context
Ben Sira wrote around 180 BC in Jerusalem. Gossip and slander were common social problems in ancient city life, where people lived close together and information spread quickly. His warnings about keeping things to yourself and confronting people directly rather than spreading rumors were very practical for his students.
His teaching about wisdom and the law was also a response to Greek culture, which valued intelligence and clever thinking very highly. Ben Sira insisted that knowledge without godliness is not real wisdom.
