SirachChapter 26
Sirach Chapter 26: Meaning
Ben Sira praises the blessings of a good wife and warns about wicked women and dishonest merchants.
Summary
This chapter opens with praise for a good wife. Ben Sira says a man with a good wife is truly blessed. She brings him joy and peace. She is a gift from God given to those who fear him. A good wife is worth more than any treasure.
Then Ben Sira lists things that frighten him, slander, riots, and false accusations. He also warns about a jealous, gossiping wife and a wife who drinks too much or acts shamefully. He warns fathers to watch over their daughters carefully so they don't get into trouble.
The chapter then returns to praising good women. A quiet, faithful wife is a priceless gift from God. Her beauty, modesty, and loyalty make her husband's home shine like sunlight. Finally, Ben Sira warns about the dangers of business and trade. Merchants and shopkeepers are often tempted to cheat. Without the fear of God to guide them, they will sin and lose everything.
Historical Context
Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem. In that culture, a wife's reputation directly affected her husband's standing in the community. A good wife was considered one of life's greatest blessings.
Business life was also a concern. Markets were places where dishonesty was common. Ben Sira wanted people to know that following God's law applied to everyday buying and selling, not just religious worship.
