Summary
This chapter is like a poem about nature. Ben Sira describes the sun shining brilliantly in the sky, so hot it scorches mountains. He says the sun is a wonderful tool made by God, and it runs its course by God's command. Then he talks about the moon, which marks the seasons and festival days. The stars light up the night sky like sparkling jewels.
Next, Ben Sira describes all kinds of weather that God controls. He talks about the rainbow, snow, lightning, hail, frost, and ice. He says God sends these things at his word. Even the freezing north wind and swirling storms follow God's plan. Ben Sira also marvels at the ocean, full of strange creatures and sea monsters, all held in place by God.
The chapter ends with a big conclusion: no matter how much we say about God, it is never enough. God is greater than all his works. We should praise him with all our strength, because he surpasses every word of praise we can give. God gave wisdom to those who are faithful to him.

Ben Sira lived around 180 BC in Jerusalem. Jewish teachers often praised God by describing nature. This kind of writing, called a hymn of creation, was common in wisdom literature. It helped readers see that God is the Creator of everything, not just the God of history and law.
For people who did not have science to explain the weather or stars, these natural events felt especially powerful and mysterious. Ben Sira uses that wonder to point people toward worshiping God.
