SirachChapter 48
Sirach Chapter 48: Meaning
Ben Sira praises Elijah, Elisha, and King Hezekiah for their boldness and faithfulness to God.
Summary
This chapter opens with a vivid description of the prophet Elijah. Ben Sira says Elijah rose up like fire. He brought a famine on Israel, called fire down from heaven three times, raised a dead child back to life, and rebuked kings. God eventually took Elijah up into heaven in a fiery chariot and a whirlwind. Ben Sira says Elijah was destined to return one day, to calm God's anger, turn fathers' hearts toward their children, and restore the tribes of Israel.
After Elijah came Elisha, filled with his spirit. Elisha performed miracles throughout his life, and his body even brought a dead man back to life after Elisha had died. But despite all these wonders, the people of Israel still refused to repent. Because of their continued sin, they were eventually captured and taken from their land.
The chapter then praises King Hezekiah. Hezekiah strengthened his city, dug a water tunnel, and trusted God when the Assyrian army threatened to destroy Jerusalem. He and the people prayed, and God sent an angel to wipe out the Assyrian army. Ben Sira also praises the prophet Isaiah, who guided Hezekiah and had visions about what would happen far into the future.
Historical Context
Elijah and Elisha were prophets in the northern kingdom of Israel around 870–800 BC. Their stories are told in 1 and 2 Kings. Elijah challenged the worship of the false god Baal and stood alone against corrupt kings. His dramatic life and departure to heaven made him one of the most celebrated figures in Jewish tradition.
Hezekiah was king of Judah around 715–686 BC. The Assyrian threat he faced was real and terrifying, Assyria had already destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel. His story shows that trusting God in a crisis leads to miraculous rescue.
