Avoid wrongdoing in every area of life and care well for your family, workers, and neighbors.
Summary
This chapter is a long list of practical advice for living a good life. It starts simply: don't do wrong and wrong won't come back at you. Don't plant seeds of injustice or you will reap a heavy harvest. Don't chase after fame or positions of honor. Don't lie, don't laugh at people in pain, and don't chain one sin to another. Stay humble, keep praying, and remember that God sees everything.
The chapter then covers how to treat people close to you. Don't trade a real friend for money. Treat a good wife with great care, she is more valuable than gold. Be fair to your workers and servants. Take care of your animals. Discipline your children while they are young. Keep your daughters safe and marry them to someone trustworthy.
Near the end, Ben Sira gives instructions about honoring your parents, respecting priests, and worshiping God properly. He also says to give to the poor and be generous to everyone. Visit the sick. Mourn with people who are grieving. In everything you do, keep your final end in mind, thinking about death will keep you from making bad choices.
Historical Context
Ben Sira wrote this around 180 BC in Jerusalem. Jewish society was organized around family, community, and religious duty. A person's good standing depended on how they treated others, their family, their workers, their neighbors, and especially the poor.
The references to priests and offerings reflect Jewish religious practice of the time. The temple in Jerusalem was still the center of worship, and following the proper religious rules mattered greatly. Ben Sira is reminding his students that good religion and good daily behavior go together.
