Tobit Chapter 10: Meaning

Back in Nineveh, Tobit's parents worry while he prepares to return home with his new wife Sarah.

Summary
Back in Nineveh, Tobit and Anna were counting every day, waiting for Tobias to come home. The expected travel time had passed and they still had not heard anything. Tobit worried that something had gone wrong with Gabael or the money. Anna was even more upset. She began to mourn as if her son were already dead, saying that Tobias was the light of her eyes. Tobit tried to calm her down and told her Tobias was safe. But Anna refused to believe it. Every day she went out to sit by the road and watch for him. She ate almost nothing and cried every night. After the fourteen days of the wedding feast were done, Tobias said to Raguel that he needed to go home. He explained that his parents must be completely desperate by now. Raguel tried to get him to stay longer by offering to send messengers, but Tobias insisted on going back himself. Raguel gave Tobias and Sarah half of all his property, servants, animals, and money, and blessed them both. He told Sarah to honor Tobias's parents as her own. Edna hugged Tobias like a son and said she hoped to see their children someday. They all said their goodbyes.

Historical Context

In the ancient world, there were no phones or fast mail. When someone went on a long journey, the only news you got was when they returned, or if a traveler happened to pass by with information. Waiting with no news was genuinely frightening.

The farewell scene between Raguel, Edna, and Tobias shows the close bonds formed through Jewish marriage customs. Once married, Tobias was now Raguel's son, and Sarah was now Anna and Tobit's daughter.

When you marry, you gain a new family. Treat them with the same love and respect.
Leaving with a blessing from those you love is a beautiful way to begin something new.
God's protection follows those who go forward in faith, even when others are afraid.
