TobitChapter 12
Tobit Chapter 12: Meaning
The angel Raphael reveals his true identity and tells Tobit and Tobias to praise God and write everything down.
Summary
Tobit told Tobias they should pay Azarias generously for everything he had done, maybe even give him half of everything they brought back. Tobias agreed that was fair, since Raphael had done so much: brought him home safely, healed Sarah, recovered the money, and cured Tobit's blindness.
When they called Raphael to pay him, he stopped them and pulled both men aside. He told them not to worry about pay. Instead, he told them to praise God and tell everyone what God had done for them. He said that guarding a king's secrets is wise, but the good works of God should be shouted out for everyone to hear.
Raphael then gave them some of his most powerful teaching. He said that prayer, fasting, giving to the poor, and living rightly are all worth more than great riches. Giving to others rescues from death and washes away sin.
Then Raphael revealed the truth: he was not Azarias. He was Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who stand before God. He had been present all along, when Tobit buried the dead, when he and Sarah prayed, God sent Raphael in response. When he revealed this, both men were terrified and fell facedown on the ground. But Raphael told them not to be afraid. He said he had not really eaten or drunk with them, what they saw was only an appearance. Then he rose from their sight and was gone.
Historical Context
In Jewish tradition, there were seven archangels who stood in the presence of God. Raphael is one of the most important. His name means "God heals" in Hebrew, which fits his role in this story perfectly.
The idea that angels appear as humans but are not truly human, do not eat, and return to heaven when their mission is complete was widely accepted in the ancient Jewish world. This revelation is one of the dramatic high points of the entire Book of Tobit.
