TobitChapter 14
Tobit Chapter 14: Meaning
Tobit gives his final words to Tobias, warning him to leave Nineveh before it falls, and then dies in peace.
Summary
After his song of praise, Tobit grew very old. He called Tobias and his grandchildren to his side and gave them his final words. He told Tobias to take his family and leave Nineveh. He believed the prophecy that Nineveh would be destroyed, and he urged Tobias to move to Media, where there would be more peace.
Tobit told Tobias that Jerusalem would be destroyed and the temple burned, but that God would one day bring his people back. The temple would be rebuilt, and all nations would eventually turn to God. This gave Tobias a reason to live faithfully, even through hard times.
Tobit gave practical final instructions too: bury me properly, bury your mother beside me, keep the law, be merciful and just. He told the story of Nadab and Ahiqar as a warning, the wicked are punished, and the charitable are saved. Then Tobit died peacefully at the age of one hundred and fifty-eight.
After Anna his mother died, Tobias buried her too. Then he moved his family to Media and lived with his in-laws Raguel and Edna, caring for them into old age. He buried them in Ecbatana. He later heard the news that Nineveh had been destroyed, just as Tobit had foretold. Tobias died at one hundred and twenty-seven years old, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Historical Context
Nineveh, the great Assyrian capital, really was destroyed in 612 BC by the Babylonians and Medes. Tobit's prophecy matches real history. The book was written after these events, and the author used them to show that God's word through the prophets always comes true.
The image of Tobias caring for his in-laws in their old age, then burying them, reflects the high value placed on honoring the elderly in Jewish culture. The book ends with a picture of a righteous man whose whole family continued to live faithfully, a reward for a life of doing good.
