Tobit Chapter 5: Meaning

Tobias finds a travel companion named Azarias, who is secretly the angel Raphael in disguise.

Summary

Tobias agreed to go to Media to collect his father's money. But he had a problem, he did not know the road and had no companion to travel with. His father told him to find a trustworthy man to go with him.

When Tobias went out looking, he met a man who said his name was Azarias. He said he knew the road well and had even stayed with their kinsman Gabael. Tobias did not know it, but Azarias was actually the angel Raphael in disguise. Tobit met with him, asked about his family to make sure he was trustworthy, and agreed to hire him for the journey.

Tobit blessed them both and asked God to send his angel with them. Then Tobias, Azarias, and even Tobias's dog set out together. As they left, Tobias's mother Anna began to cry. She was afraid she would never see her son again and that the money was not worth the risk.

Tobit comforted her and told her not to worry. He said a good angel would keep their son safe and that Tobias would come home well. His words calmed her.

Historical Context

Traveling long distances in the ancient world was very dangerous. Roads were not safe, and there were robbers, wild animals, and harsh weather. It was normal to hire a guide or traveling companion who knew the route and could help you reach your destination safely.

Angels appearing as ordinary humans is a common theme in Jewish and early Christian writings. The idea is that God sends helpers who look just like regular people so they can walk alongside those who need them.
