TobitChapter 8

Tobit Chapter 8: Meaning

Tobias and Sarah pray on their wedding night, the demon flees, and Raguel throws a big celebration.

Summary
On the wedding night, Tobias remembered Raphael's instructions. He placed the fish's heart and liver on burning coals to make smoke. The demon Asmodeus smelled it and fled all the way to Egypt, where the angel Raphael bound it. The demon was completely defeated. Before anything else, Tobias and Sarah got up and prayed together. Tobias thanked God for creating marriage and for giving him Sarah. He asked God to show them mercy and let them grow old together. Sarah agreed with a prayer of her own. Meanwhile, Raguel was so worried that he went outside and dug a grave in case Tobias had also died. He sent a servant girl to check the room, and she came back with the best news, both of them were sound asleep and completely fine. Raguel burst into praise to God. He thanked God for showing mercy and giving him what he had feared most would happen did not happen. He ordered the grave to be filled back in. Raguel held a wedding feast for fourteen days. He promised Tobias half of all his possessions right away and the rest when he and Edna died.

Historical Context

Wedding celebrations in the ancient world often lasted a full week or more. They were joyful community events. The fact that Raguel prepared a grave shows how deeply frightened he was after seven previous sons-in-law had died.

Tobias and Sarah's wedding prayer is one of the earliest examples of a couple praying together before marriage. It reflects the Jewish belief that marriage is a sacred gift from God, rooted in the story of Adam and Eve from Genesis.
