Wisdom of SolomonChapter 16

Wisdom of Solomon Chapter 16: Meaning

God punished Egypt with creatures but fed Israel with bread from heaven.

Summary
This chapter compares what happened to Egypt and what happened to Israel. Egypt was punished with swarms of gross creatures, vermin and insects. But God gave Israel quails to eat. Even when Israel was bitten by snakes in the desert, God healed them quickly. He didn't let his anger last long. The chapter points out something amazing: a look at a bronze snake on a pole didn't actually do the healing. It was God's word that healed them. God holds power over life and death. His word can save people from anything. Meanwhile, Egypt was hit with storms, rain, hail, and fire. The fire burned even in the water, destroying Egypt's crops. Creation itself seemed to fight against Egypt while protecting Israel. Even fire and ice obeyed God's commands. But for Israel, God sent manna, bread from heaven. It tasted like whatever each person wanted. It was the food of angels. Snow and ice could survive fire without melting, just so Israel could have food in the desert. The chapter ends with a reminder: God's word, not growing crops, is what truly feeds people. Those who don't give thanks to God will find their hope melting away like frost in the sun.

Historical Context

This chapter looks back at several events from the Exodus story. It references the plagues of Egypt, especially the insects and hail, and also the time in the desert when Israelites were bitten by snakes and healed by looking at a bronze serpent (Numbers 21). It also mentions the manna God sent to feed Israel in the wilderness.

The writer, living in Alexandria around 100–50 BC, used these stories to show Jewish readers that God is always on the side of his people. Creation itself bends to God's will, punishing enemies and protecting those who trust him.

What This Means Today

When we face trouble, it's God — not the things around us — who truly saves us.
God's word has the power to heal and restore us in ways nothing else can.
We should pray and give thanks early in the morning, before the day gets busy.
God can take care of all our needs, even in the middle of a desert.
A person who doesn't thank God for what they have will eventually lose hope.
