Isaiah

Yahweh is salvation

hebrewmale0 verses
יְשַׁעְיָהוּ

Isaiah was one of the four major prophets of the Old Testament who ministered in Judah during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. His book contains powerful messianic prophecies about the coming of Christ, including the suffering servant passages. He is often called the 'prince of prophets' and his writings are among the most quoted Old Testament texts in the New Testament.

Etymology & Roots

Isaiah is the English form of the Hebrew יְשַׁעְיָהוּ (Yeshayahu), a theophoric compound. The first element derives from the root יָשַׁע (yasha), meaning "to save" or "to deliver," in its noun or verbal form יְשׁוּעָה (yeshuah), meaning "salvation." The second element is יָהוּ (Yahu), the contracted form of the divine name YHWH. The full meaning is therefore "Yahweh is salvation" or "salvation of Yahweh." A shorter form is יְשַׁעְיָה (Yeshayah).

The name shares its root with Joshua, Hosea, Hoshea, Jesus, and the Hebrew word yeshuah itself, forming one of the most theologically productive name-families in the Bible. The name is therefore not merely a label but a compressed theological proclamation.

Biblical Bearers

The most celebrated bearer is Isaiah son of Amoz, the eighth-century BC prophet of Judah who ministered during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (Isaiah 1:1). He is distinguished by the breadth and depth of his oracles, ranging from searing indictments of social injustice (Isaiah 1-12) to the incomparable servant songs (Isaiah 40-55) and eschatological visions of renewal (Isaiah 56-66).

He advised Hezekiah during the Assyrian crisis (2 Kings 19:20; Isaiah 37) and delivered the prediction of Hezekiah's recovery from illness. Jewish tradition holds that Isaiah was martyred under Manasseh. Several other men named Isaiah appear in post-exilic genealogies (1 Chronicles 3:21; 25:3; Ezra 8:7; Nehemiah 11:7).

Theological Significance

Isaiah's name — "Yahweh is salvation" — is the thesis of his entire prophetic ministry. No other Old Testament prophet so comprehensively anticipates the person and work of Jesus Christ. The virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14), the servant who bears the sins of many (Isaiah 53:5-6), the anointed one who brings good news to the poor (Isaiah 61:1, cited by Jesus in Luke 4:18), and the New Creation (Isaiah 65:17) are all announced in this single book.

Isaiah 40:31 — "those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength" — has sustained believers through centuries of hardship. That a prophet named "Yahweh is salvation" should become the primary Old Testament source for New Testament Christology is not coincidence; it is the coherence of Scripture testifying to one redemptive purpose spanning both Testaments.
