Jeremiah was a major prophet called by God before he was born to be a prophet to the nations. He ministered during the final decades of Judah before the Babylonian exile, often called the 'weeping prophet' for his deep grief over his people's sin and coming judgment. Despite fierce opposition, imprisonment, and attempts on his life, he faithfully proclaimed God's word for over forty years. He also prophesied the new covenant that God would establish.

Etymology & Roots

Jeremiah in Hebrew is יִרְמְיָהוּ (Yirmeyahu), a theophoric compound consisting of יָהּ/יָהוּ (Yah/Yahu), the divine name, and the root רוּם (rum) or רָמָה (ramah), meaning "to raise up" or "to exalt." The name thus means "Yahweh will exalt" or "Yahweh establishes." Some scholars alternatively derive it from the root רָמָה (ramah), "to throw" or "to cast," yielding "Yahweh has cast" — possibly referencing divine appointment. The shortened form is Jeriah or Jeremoth.

In Greek the name became Ἱερεμίας (Hieremias), passing through Latin Hieremias to English Jeremiah and its contracted form Jeremy. The name was common in the late monarchic period, borne by multiple individuals.

Biblical Bearers

The foremost bearer is Jeremiah of Anathoth (c. 627–586 BC), the major prophet called before birth who ministered through Judah's final decades and the Babylonian exile, authoring both the book of Jeremiah and Lamentations.

Other biblical Jeremiahs include a Benjamite warrior who joined David at Ziklag (1 Chronicles 12:4), several heads of families in the tribe of Gad (1 Chronicles 5:24), a priest who returned from exile (Nehemiah 12:1), and the father of Hamutal, wife of King Josiah (2 Kings 23:31). The name's frequency reflects its deeply rooted covenantal resonance in the late monarchy.

Theological Significance

"Yahweh will exalt" — the irony in Jeremiah's life is that the man whom God promised to exalt was rejected, beaten, imprisoned, and thrown into a muddy cistern (Jeremiah 38:6). Yet the name proved prophetically true at the deepest level: Jeremiah's words outlasted the kings who scorned him, his prophecy of the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31–34) became the charter for all subsequent redemptive history, and he was vindicated by every generation after the exile.

His calling before birth (Jeremiah 1:5) and his proclamation that God's plans give future and hope (Jeremiah 29:11) reveal a God who exalts his servants not by sparing them suffering but by ensuring their word endures.
