Ahban
Ahban was the son of Abishur, a descendant of Judah. (1Ch.2.29)
Biography
Ahban was a son of Abishur and his wife Abihail, listed within the genealogical records of the tribe of Judah in 1 Chronicles 2:29. He appears as part of the Jerahmeelite clan, a sub-group within Judah tracing descent from Hezron through Jerahmeel. The Chronicler notes Ahban and his brother Molid as the children of Abishur and Abihail specifically, one of the few instances in these genealogies where a mother is named, suggesting her family was of sufficient distinction to merit mention. Beyond his genealogical placement, no narrative detail about Ahban's life, deeds, or descendants is preserved in Scripture. He belongs to the extensive catalogue of tribal figures whose names the Chronicler preserved to document the full scope of Judah's family history.
Significance
Though Ahban receives no biographical narrative, his inclusion in the Chronicler's genealogy carries weight within the canonical structure of 1 Chronicles. The Chronicler's painstaking recording of Judahite lineages, particularly within the Jerahmeelite branch, served the post-exilic community's need to establish tribal identity and land claims after the Babylonian exile. Knowing who descended from whom was not merely academic; it governed priestly service, property rights, and community belonging under the restored covenant order (Ezra 2; Neh. 7). Ahban's name preserved in Scripture reflects the biblical conviction that every member of the covenant people matters, a truth expanded in the New Testament's vision of all believers known and named by God (John 10:3).
