Ahishahar
Ahishahar was a son of Bilhan and a descendant of Benjamin. (1Ch.7.10)
Biography
Ahishahar was a son of Bilhan and a descendant of Jediael, who in turn descended from Benjamin. He is listed in 1 Chronicles 7:10 among the heads of houses within the tribe of Benjamin, in the section of the genealogy that traces the sons of Jediael through Bilhan. The name Ahishahar means "brother of the dawn," a poetic name that may reflect the circumstances of his birth or a family naming tradition. His listing alongside brothers such as Jeush, Benjamin (a personal name), Ehud, Chenaanah, Zethan, and Tarshish suggests he was part of a prominent Benjamite clan during the divided monarchy era. No individual narrative is associated with him, and his significance lies within the larger genealogical framework of his tribe.
Significance
Ahishahar's inclusion in the Chronicler's genealogical records reflects the theological purpose of 1 Chronicles 1–9: to establish the legitimacy and continuity of the twelve tribes as the covenant people of God after the devastation of exile. The post-exilic community returning from Babylon needed to reconstitute its tribal and family identities, and these lists served as both historical record and spiritual charter. Ahishahar, though silent in the narrative, represents one thread in the tapestry of Benjamite heritage, the same tribe that produced Saul, Jonathan, Mordecai, and Paul. His name's presence affirms that God's faithfulness extends to every family within the covenant, not only those whose stories are told at length.
