Amariah
Amariah was a high priest during the reign of Jehoshaphat and an ancestor of Ezra the scribe. (1Ch.6.11; Ezr.7.3)
Biography
This Amariah served as high priest during the reign of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah (c. 870–848 BC), and his legacy extended far beyond his own generation. He appears in the Levitical genealogy of 1 Chronicles 6:11 as a vital link, and Ezra 7:3 traces Ezra the scribe's own priestly lineage through him, establishing a continuous thread of priestly faithfulness spanning several centuries.
His high priesthood coincided with one of Judah's more spiritually diligent eras, as Jehoshaphat sought to reinstate faithful worship and legal instruction throughout the kingdom. Amariah's tenure likely supported the Levitical teaching missions that Jehoshaphat commissioned across Judah (2 Chronicles 17:7–9).
Significance
The significance of this Amariah is amplified by his place in Ezra's ancestry. Ezra's celebrated return to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, characterized by his deep commitment to the Torah, was grounded in a long priestly heritage. By tracing the line through this Amariah, Scripture affirms that Ezra's reforming zeal was not an aberration but the fruit of a priestly lineage with deep roots in covenant faithfulness.
This underscores the biblical principle that God works through generations of obedient servants to accomplish his redemptive purposes at decisive historical moments.
