Asahel
Asahel was a Levite appointed by Hezekiah to distribute the tithes and dedicated things (2 Chr 31:13).
Biography
This Asahel was one of several Levites appointed during Hezekiah's sweeping religious reformation of Judah in the late eighth century BC. Following the king's directive to restore proper temple worship and revive the tithe system, a network of officials was established to oversee the collection and fair distribution of the people's freewill offerings, tithes, and dedicated gifts (2 Chr 31:11–13). Asahel is named among the supervisors entrusted with this administrative responsibility, working under the direction of Conaniah and his brother Shimei. His role ensured that the material support offered by the people for temple ministry reached its intended recipients, the priests and Levites serving God's house. Though little else is known of him personally, his appointment reflects the scale of Hezekiah's institutional reform.
Significance
This Asahel represents a class of faithful servants whose contributions to God's work were administrative rather than dramatic. The reform of Hezekiah required not only prophets and priests but also reliable stewards who could manage resources with integrity. His inclusion by name in the Chronicler's account affirms that Scripture honors those who serve faithfully behind the scenes in institutional roles. Theologically, his work echoes the principle that every member of the covenant community has a role in sustaining corporate worship. The careful administration of tithes and offerings was itself an act of worship, ensuring the temple's ministry could continue uninterrupted, a reminder that faithful stewardship is integral to the health of God's community.
