Biography

Beno was a Levite belonging to the clan of Merari, listed among the descendants of Jaaziah in the Levitical genealogy recorded in 1 Chronicles 24:26–27. The name Beno is unusual in that it may mean simply "his son" in Hebrew, leading some scholars to question whether it is a proper name or a genealogical notation. He lived during the era of the Divided Monarchy and is associated with the organizational reforms David undertook to structure the Levitical orders for Temple worship. Though virtually nothing is known of his personal history beyond this genealogical notice, Beno's inclusion in the Levitical register affirms his membership in the sacred tribe entrusted with the service of Israel's worship.

Significance

Beno's presence in the Levitical genealogy of 1 Chronicles reflects the meticulous care with which Israel recorded the lineages of those appointed to sacred service. The Merarite clan, to which Beno belonged, was responsible for the physical structure of the tabernacle and later the Temple, carrying and maintaining the framework of God's dwelling among his people. Even figures like Beno, whose role is recorded only in a genealogical list, point to the theological truth that every member of the covenant community has a designated place in God's ordered service. Faithfulness in obscure roles is part of the larger fabric of Israel's worship life.
