Bichri
Bichri, a Benjamite, was the father of Sheba, who led a rebellion against King David.
Biography
Bichri was a Benjamite whose primary significance in biblical history lies in being the father of Sheba, who led a dangerous insurrection against King David immediately following the suppression of Absalom's rebellion (2 Samuel 20). When Sheba the son of Bichri sounded the trumpet and called Israel to defect from David, declaring "We have no portion in David, no inheritance in the son of Jesse!", he ignited a separatist movement that threatened to fracture the newly reunified kingdom. David dispatched Joab to suppress the revolt, which ended when a wise woman of Abel Beth-maacah arranged for Sheba's head to be thrown over the city wall. Bichri himself plays no active role in these events; he is known entirely through his notorious son.
Significance
Though Bichri is known only as Sheba's father, his Benjamite lineage carries significant theological and political weight. Benjamin was the tribe of Saul, and tribal resentments over Saul's displaced dynasty simmered beneath the surface of David's reign. Sheba's revolt exploited these tensions, and the rebellion's nearly successful disruption of David's kingdom illustrates the fragility of political unity without genuine covenantal loyalty. The episode teaches that the unity of God's people cannot rest merely on charismatic leadership or political power but must be rooted in shared covenant commitment. It also prefigures the ultimate tribal fracture at the death of Solomon (1 Kings 12), when similar slogans of disunity would tear the kingdom of David apart for good.
