Bukki
Bukki, a high priest, was the son of Abishua and the father of Uzzi in the lineage of Aaron.
Biography
Bukki the high priest was a descendant of Aaron through the line of Eleazar and Phinehas. He is listed in the high-priestly genealogy as the son of Abishua and the father of Uzzi (1 Chronicles 6:5, 51; Ezra 7:4). His ministry fell during what tradition associates with the period of the Divided Monarchy, though the precise details of his tenure are not described in Scripture. As a Zadokite ancestor, Bukki occupied a critical place in the unbroken chain of Aaronic priests who maintained Israel's sacrificial worship and mediated between God and the people. His inclusion in both Chronicles and Ezra underscores the importance placed on priestly lineage in establishing legitimacy of temple ministry.
Significance
Bukki the high priest holds theological significance as one of the links in the unbroken chain of Aaronic succession stretching from Aaron to the post-exilic priesthood. The careful preservation of this genealogy in 1 Chronicles 6 and Ezra 7 reflects Israel's deep conviction that legitimate priestly ministry required traceable descent from Aaron. This continuity pointed forward to Christ, the ultimate High Priest, whose eternal priesthood supersedes yet fulfills the Aaronic order. Bukki's place in the genealogical record underscores that God does not abandon His covenant institutions but sustains them across generations, providing ongoing access to divine grace.
