Biography

Buz of the tribe of Gad was the son of Abdiel and the father of Jahdo, whose lineage is recorded in the genealogy of the Gadites in 1 Chronicles 5:14. This genealogical list traces the tribal families of Gad who settled in Gilead and Bashan, east of the Jordan River. The Gadite genealogy is provided to establish the hereditary claims of the tribe to their Transjordanian territory, and Buz appears as one of the clan ancestors in this lineage. Although Scripture provides no narrative details about Buz of Gad, his place within this carefully preserved tribal record indicates that his family held a recognized and documented standing within the community of Israel during the period of the Divided Monarchy.

Significance

Buz of Gad, like many figures preserved in the genealogical registers of Chronicles, embodies the biblical principle that every Israelite family had a legitimate and divinely ordained place within the covenant community. The tribal genealogies of 1 Chronicles 1–9 served a vital purpose in post-exilic Israel, helping the returning community reconstitute its identity and land claims on the basis of ancestral records. Buz's inclusion in the Gadite lineage reminds us that God's covenant faithfulness was expressed not only in dramatic historical events but in the quiet continuity of family lines that sustained the people of God across generations, each name a testimony to God's ongoing provision.
