Ezer
Ezer was a Horite chief in the land of Seir, a son of Seir the Horite.
Biography
Ezer was a Horite chief in the land of Seir, identified in Genesis 36:21 as a son of Seir the Horite and listed among the clan leaders who inhabited the region of Edom before and alongside the descendants of Esau. The Horites were an indigenous people of the hill country of Seir whose land Esau's descendants eventually occupied (Deuteronomy 2:12, 22). Ezer's descendants are called the 'chiefs of Ezer' in Genesis 36:30, indicating that his clan formed one of the named political-territorial units of Horite society in the region. His name appears in both the genealogical list of Genesis 36 and the parallel account in 1 Chronicles 1:38–42. The Seir region corresponds to the rugged territory of ancient Edom, south and southeast of the Dead Sea.
Significance
Ezer the Horite chief appears in Genesis 36 as part of Scripture's unusually thorough documentation of non-Israelite peoples in the Edomite region. The inclusion of the Horite genealogy reflects the biblical conviction that God's knowledge and sovereignty extend over all nations, not only Israel. The preservation of Ezer's name in both Genesis and Chronicles demonstrates the comprehensive scope of the Chronicler's genealogical vision: all nations descend from Adam, and all peoples live under God's providential ordering of history. Edomite and Horite history serves as a backdrop against which Israel's distinctiveness as a covenant nation is highlighted. These peripheral genealogies also affirm the historical reliability of the biblical narrative, grounding Israel's story in a verifiable ancient Near Eastern world.
