Hathath
Hathath was a son of Othniel, the son of Kenaz, from the tribe of Judah. (1Ch.4.13)
Biography
Hathath was a son of Othniel, the firstborn son of Kenaz from the tribe of Judah, mentioned in the genealogical record of 1 Chronicles 4:13. His grandfather Kenaz was the father of Othniel, Israel's first judge, the man raised up by God to deliver Israel from the oppression of Cushan-rishathaim of Mesopotamia (Judg. 3:9–11). Hathath's father Othniel is celebrated in Scripture as a man upon whom the Spirit of the LORD came mightily, a paradigmatic figure of Spirit-empowered deliverance. Though Hathath himself receives no narrative attention, his inclusion in the Judahite genealogy of Chronicles connects him to one of the most distinguished warrior-leader families in Israel's tribal history.
Significance
Hathath's significance lies primarily in his genealogical connection to Othniel, Israel's first judge and a prototype of the Spirit-empowered deliverers that God would raise throughout the period of the judges. The Chronicles genealogies were composed not merely as family records but as theological documents affirming the continuity of God's covenant people. Hathath's place in the lineage of Othniel reminds readers that the legacy of faithfulness is transmitted through generations, that the families through whom God works in one era become the foundations for what God builds in the next. His ancestry points backward to deliverance and forward to the ongoing purposes of God among the tribe of Judah.
