Helek
Helek was a son of Gilead and ancestor of the Helekite clan in the tribe of Manasseh. (Num.26.30; Jos.17.2)
Biography
Helek was a son of Gilead and great-grandson of Manasseh, son of Joseph. His name appears in the tribal census of Numbers 26:30, where his descendants are recorded as the Helekite clan within the half-tribe of Manasseh west of the Jordan. When Joshua oversaw the distribution of the promised land among the tribes, the sons of Gilead, including the Helekites, were allotted territory in Canaan (Joshua 17:2). Although Helek himself does not appear in any narrative episode, his significance lies in his role as a clan founder. The careful enumeration of Manassite sub-clans in Numbers 26 served a practical administrative function: these family units formed the basis for land distribution, military conscription, and tribal identity in the settlement of Canaan, making Helek a genuinely important figure in Israel's early national organization.
Significance
Helek's place in the Manassite genealogy reflects the meticulous ordering of Israel's tribal life under divine direction. The establishment of the Helekite clan exemplifies how God's covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob translated into concrete territorial inheritance for specific families generations later. Each clan, including the Helekites, received a portion of the land God had promised, demonstrating that the fulfillment of God's promises is both communal and particular. Helek's lineage stands as a small but real piece of the larger mosaic of Israel's inheritance, reminding readers that God's redemptive plan encompasses the full breadth of His people, family by family.
