Ishi
Ishi was one of the leaders of the Simeonites who attacked the Hamites in Gedor during the days of Hezekiah (1Ch.4.42).
Biography
This Ishi was a leader among the Simeonites during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah, commanding a military expedition that proved historically significant (1 Chronicles 4:42). He led five hundred men of Simeon into the hill country of Seir, the region of the Edomites, where they struck down the remaining Amalekites who had taken refuge there. The text identifies him as one of the sons of Ishi, suggesting a family group that held recognized military authority within the tribe of Simeon. This expansion into previously Amalekite territory was understood as a divinely sanctioned resettlement, and the Simeonites dwelt there to the time of the Chronicler's writing. Ishi's leadership ensured Simeonite survival and territorial expansion during a turbulent era.
Significance
Ishi's military campaign against the Amalekites in Seir during Hezekiah's reign reflects the ongoing fulfillment of earlier divine commands regarding the Amalekites (cf. 1 Samuel 15). The Simeonites' expansion under his leadership demonstrates that even smaller, less prominent tribes participated in God's larger purposes for the land. The timing, during Hezekiah's reform era, suggests a renewed national vigor that accompanied religious renewal. Ishi's expedition illustrates how tribal military action could align with broader covenantal concerns, as Israel continued to establish its presence in territories promised to its ancestors.
