Ithrites
The Ithrites were a clan descended from Kiriath-jearim (1Ch.2.53), and two of David's mighty warriors, Ira and Gareb, were Ithrites (2Sa.23.38; 1Ch.11.40).
Biography
The Ithrites were a clan of Judah, descending from the families associated with Kiriath-jearim according to 1 Chronicles 2:53. Kiriath-jearim was a city of considerable sacred significance in Israel's history, having served as the long-term resting place of the ark of the covenant for two decades before David brought it to Jerusalem (1 Samuel 7:1–2). Two of David's celebrated mighty warriors, Ira the Ithrite and Gareb the Ithrite, are identified with this clan in both 2 Samuel 23:38 and 1 Chronicles 11:40, suggesting that the Ithrites produced warriors of outstanding valor who distinguished themselves in David's elite corps of military champions during the consolidation of the Davidic kingdom.
Significance
The Ithrites illustrate how particular families and clans, though not from explicitly priestly or royal lineages, could nonetheless make lasting contributions to Israel's sacred history. Their long association with Kiriath-jearim, the city that housed the ark, may have instilled in them a deep covenant devotion that expressed itself in military loyalty to God's anointed king. The presence of Ira and Gareb among David's Thirty points to the Ithrites as a family of fierce and capable men whose service helped secure the kingdom through which God's redemptive promises would unfold. Their story affirms that faithful, courageous service, in whatever form, has a place in the unfolding of God's purposes.
