Izliah
Izliah was a Benjamite, one of the sons of Elpaal.
Biography
Izliah was a Benjamite, recorded in the genealogical lists of 1 Chronicles 8 as one of the sons of Elpaal (1 Chronicles 8:18). He belonged to the tribe of Benjamin, from which Israel's first king, Saul, was drawn, and which maintained a distinct identity even after the division of the monarchy. The Chronicler places Izliah within the Benjamite clans who settled in Jerusalem and the surrounding regions. Though no narrative account of his life or deeds survives, his inclusion in the sacred genealogies indicates that he was recognized as a significant member of his clan, contributing to the continuity and preservation of Benjamite tribal structure during the era of the divided monarchy.
Significance
Izliah's mention in the Benjamite genealogies serves as a reminder that biblical history encompasses far more individuals than those whose stories are told at length. The tribe of Benjamin held strategic importance in Israelite society, serving as a buffer between the northern and southern kingdoms after the national division. By preserving names like Izliah, the Chronicler affirms that God's covenant extended to all of His people, not merely the prominent. Each name in these lists represents a family, a heritage, and a continuing thread in the fabric of Israel's identity as God's covenant community through every generation.
