Biography

Jared was a patriarch of the antediluvian era, descended from Seth and standing sixth in the genealogical line from Adam to Noah (Genesis 5:15-20). The son of Mahalalel, Jared lived to the remarkable age of 962 years, making him the third longest-lived individual in the biblical record. His greatest distinction is as the father of Enoch, the celebrated patriarch who 'walked with God' and was taken by God without experiencing death (Genesis 5:21-24). Jared also appears in Luke's genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:37), linking the Savior to the entire antediluvian lineage. His name is thought to mean 'descent' in Hebrew. Though he leaves no recorded deeds or teachings, his role as Enoch's father places him at a crucial node in the genealogical chain connecting creation to redemption.

Significance

Jared's theological significance is inseparable from his identity as the father of Enoch. By fathering Enoch, one of the most spiritually celebrated figures in the entire Bible, whose intimate walk with God earned him translation without death (Genesis 5:24; Hebrews 11:5), Jared played an indispensable generational role in preserving godly lineage from Seth through Noah and ultimately to Christ. His presence in Luke's genealogy (Luke 3:37) places him within the messianic line, connecting Jesus' humanity to the earliest epochs of human existence. Jared's extraordinarily long life also reflects the unique vitality of early humanity and, for many interpreters, God's patient providence during the critical pre-flood generations when righteous lineages were essential to the survival of the covenant seed.
