Biography

Jedaiah son of Shimri was a member of the tribe of Simeon whose name appears in a genealogical record preserved in 1 Chronicles 4:37. He is identified as a leader among the Simeonite clans who, during the reign of King Hezekiah, participated in a successful military expansion into the region of Mount Seir (Edom), dispossessing the Amalekites and settling there with their livestock. Though his individual characteristics are not elaborated in the text, his inclusion in this genealogy of Simeonite princes marks him as a recognized leader in his clan's territorial history during the later monarchy period.

Significance

Jedaiah's appearance in the Simeonite expansion narrative of 1 Chronicles 4 reflects the ongoing fulfillment of the tribal inheritance promises made to Jacob's sons, even for Simeon, a tribe whose blessing in Genesis 49 was notably ambiguous due to the violence of its eponymous patriarch. The Hezekiah-era expansion into the region of Edom demonstrates that tribal identity and land claims remained vital to Israelite communities even in the divided monarchy period. Jedaiah's genealogical preservation serves a theological purpose: it demonstrates that God's covenantal promises extended to all twelve tribes, not only to the more prominent ones, affirming the comprehensive scope of divine faithfulness to Israel.
