Jeiel
Jeiel was the grandfather of Jahaziel, a Levite who prophesied during the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah.
Biography
Jeiel the Levite appears in 2 Chronicles 20:14 as the great-grandfather of Jahaziel, a Spirit-filled prophet who delivered one of the most remarkable oracles in the Chronicler's history. When the combined armies of Moab, Ammon, and Edom advanced against Jehoshaphat's Judah, the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel, who proclaimed that the battle belonged to God and that Judah need not fight. Jeiel's position in Jahaziel's genealogy, identified as a Levite of the sons of Asaph, anchors this prophetic moment within a specific Levitical musical tradition. The Asaphite lineage was known for its prophetic-liturgical function in Israel's worship, and Jeiel's faithful place in that heritage helped shape the family from which a decisive prophetic voice emerged.
Significance
Jeiel's significance lies in his ancestral contribution to the Levitical prophetic tradition that produced Jahaziel's oracle in 2 Chronicles 20. The Spirit's movement through Jahaziel cannot be separated from the heritage of faithful Levitical service that Jeiel represented. His place in the Asaphite lineage underscores how God's redemptive purposes often work across generations, a faithful ancestor whose covenantal service cultivated the spiritual environment from which later prophetic voices emerge. Jeiel's story thus affirms that acts of faithful, unheralded service within God's covenant community carry generational significance far exceeding their immediate visibility or personal recognition.
