Jeroham
Jeroham was the father of Azariah, one of the commanders who supported Jehoiada in overthrowing Athaliah and installing Joash as king.
Biography
Jeroham appears in the historical account of the dramatic coup that ended the usurper Athaliah's reign over Judah (2 Chronicles 23). His son Azariah was among the five military commanders whom the priest Jehoiada recruited to orchestrate the restoration of the Davidic monarchy. These commanders traveled throughout Judah gathering the Levites and clan heads to Jerusalem, where they entered into a solemn covenant at the temple. Jeroham's lineage placed his son in a position of military authority, and the family's willingness to act on behalf of the legitimate Davidic heir, young Joash, made them instruments of providential preservation during one of Judah's darkest political crises.
Significance
Jeroham's significance lies chiefly in the faithfulness of his son Azariah during a moment of national crisis. When Athaliah had all but extinguished the Davidic line, a remnant of loyal commanders, including Azariah son of Jeroham, stood with Jehoiada to protect God's covenant promise. Their collective action demonstrates that God's redemptive purposes are often carried forward through ordinary families whose descendants rise to meet extraordinary moments. Jeroham thus represents the unseen heritage of faithfulness that sustains Israel across generations.
