Biography

Jesher was a son of Caleb and his wife Azubah, listed in the genealogy of Judah preserved in 1 Chronicles 2:18. The name Jesher means "uprightness" or "straightness," and he is mentioned alongside his brothers Shobab and Ardon as sons born to Caleb through Azubah. Caleb son of Hezron was a prominent figure in the genealogical record of Judah, and his descendants formed important clan structures within the tribe. Jesher's birth places him in the era of Egypt and the Wilderness, making him part of the foundational generation whose lineage shaped the tribal identity of Judah through the conquest and settlement periods.

Significance

Though Jesher himself receives no narrative beyond his name in the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 2:18, his place in the line of Caleb carries symbolic resonance. Caleb is one of the Bible's great figures of courageous faith, the spy who, alone with Joshua, trusted God's promise regarding the land (Numbers 13–14). To be numbered among Caleb's sons is to be situated within a heritage of bold covenant faithfulness. Genealogies in Chronicles serve a theological purpose: they remind post-exilic Israel that its identity and future are rooted in the promises God made to faithful ancestors like Caleb.
