Jesse
Jesse was the father of King David and an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
Biography
Jesse was a prosperous landowner and shepherd from Bethlehem in Judah, the son of Obed and grandson of Boaz and Ruth (Ruth 4:17-22; 1 Chr. 2:12). He fathered at least eight sons, the youngest of whom was David (1 Sam. 16:10-11; 17:12). When the prophet Samuel came to Bethlehem under divine instruction, Jesse presented seven of his sons before him, yet God chose none of them. It was only when David was summoned from the fields that God declared him His anointed (1 Sam. 16:12-13). Jesse's lineage placed him within the tribe of Judah, fulfilling earlier patriarchal blessings. Though not a prominent figure in his own right, his household became the vessel through which God's covenant with David was inaugurated.
Significance
Jesse occupies a theologically pivotal position in the biblical narrative as the root from which the Davidic dynasty sprang. Isaiah prophesied that 'a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse' (Isa. 11:1), a messianic oracle pointing directly to Jesus Christ, who is called 'the Root and Offspring of David' in Revelation 22:16. The genealogies of both Matthew and Luke trace Jesus through Jesse, establishing the fulfillment of the Davidic covenant. Jesse's humble identity as a Bethlehemite shepherd reinforces the theological motif that God consistently works through the unlikely and overlooked to accomplish His redemptive purposes.
