Joab
Joab, a descendant of Pahath-Moab, was among those who returned to Jerusalem with Ezra (Ezr.8.9).
Biography
Joab, a descendant of Pahath-Moab, is identified among the heads of families who accompanied Ezra on the momentous return journey from Babylon to Jerusalem (Ezra 8:9). He brought with him 218 men of his family, a substantial contingent indicating he was a man of standing within the exilic community. The return journey led by Ezra in approximately 458 BC was a spiritually charged event, marked by communal fasting and prayer at the Ahava Canal before the group set out without a military escort, trusting entirely in God's protection (Ezra 8:21-23). Joab's willingness to make this dangerous multi-month journey across foreign territories reflects genuine courage and deep commitment to the restoration of Jerusalem and its covenant community.
Significance
Joab of Pahath-Moab embodies the faithfulness of the diaspora community that chose to prioritize covenant identity over the security of established life in Babylon. The family of Pahath-Moab, whose name interestingly references Moab, had nonetheless maintained their Israelite identity through captivity. Joab's leadership of 218 returnees illustrates how God's purposes of restoration are carried out through the collective action of families choosing to return to the land of promise. His participation in Ezra's caravan reflects the theological reality that the return from exile was not merely a political event but a renewed act of covenant fidelity and trust in Yahweh's faithfulness.
