Mattithiah
Mattithiah, a Levite, served as a musician during the time of King David (1Ch.15.18,21; 16.5; 25.3,21).
Biography
Mattithiah was a Levite musician appointed by King David to serve in the worship ministry surrounding the Ark of the Covenant. He is mentioned among the Levites of the second rank who were assigned to play lyres set to the Sheminith, a musical term likely referring to a lower octave or eight-stringed instrument (1 Chronicles 15:18, 21). When David organized the permanent worship arrangements for the tabernacle, Mattithiah continued in his role as a temple musician under the direction of his father Jeduthun, one of the three chief musicians alongside Asaph and Heman (1 Chronicles 16:5; 25:3, 21). As a son of Jeduthun, Mattithiah belonged to one of the most distinguished musical families in Israel, dedicated to prophesying with instruments in praise of God.
Significance
Mattithiah exemplifies the essential role of music and worship in Israel's spiritual life during the golden age of the United Monarchy. His appointment by David (1 Chronicles 15:18, 21; 25:3, 21) reflects the king's conviction that worship was not incidental but central to the nation's relationship with God. As a son of Jeduthun, Mattithiah belonged to a lineage whose musical ministry was described as prophetic, suggesting that instrumental worship was understood as a form of divine communication. His service established patterns of liturgical worship that would continue through Solomon's temple and beyond, ultimately shaping the worship traditions inherited by the early church. Mattithiah reminds believers that artistic gifts dedicated to God carry spiritual authority.
